Imagine yourself sitting by the fire with family and friends roasting marshmallows, singing songs, telling scary stories….. Camping and sleeping bags seem to have always been a part of our lives. However, more than 200 years ago, camping was not even considered a recreational activity. Maybe if they had some of the sleeping bags offered today, things would have been different. Lewis and Clark changed that when they began their amazing journey across the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. We'll never know what kind of sleeping bags they used, but since then, people have found “the great outdoors" to be a fun way to become one with nature. Sleeping bags also help make camping an ideal way to create memorable experiences with family and friends. The United States took notice of the great benefits of camping, and officially declared June the Great Outdoors Month. Just remember, whether camping or hiking, choosing the right sleeping bag is a very important part of your packing checklist. What types of sleeping bags can I choose from?Depending on the type of adventure and temperature, choosing the right sleeping bag is very important. For instance, if you are looking to travel light, without the excess weight of a bulky and heavy sleeping bag, lightweight sleeping bags will fit the bill. We have a page dedicated solely to these particular bags. Please note, that lightweight does not mean you will be compromising quality or warmth. We carry lightweight sleeping bags that can keep you warm in temperatures as low as -40 degrees Farenheit and -40 degrees Celsius. If you are looking for something rugged, where weight is not a concern, we carry that as well. Many of the Backside, Grizzly, Black Pine, ALPS OutdoorZ, and Big River Outdoors items we carry offer these features. Other types of bags that are available are the two-person sleeping bags. These bags are very popular due to its size and ability to fit more than one person, as the name suggests. We have a page dedicated to this type of sleeping bag as well. Two-person (or double sleeping bags) allow cozy space for two people, to make sleeping through the night just a little more comfortable. If you are trying to select between the shapes of sleeping bags, there are mummy sleeping bags and rectangular sleeping bags. We offer a page for each. Depending on the temperature and desired comfort level, choosing a mummy or rectangular sleeping bag is very important. For instance, mummy sleeping bags have better heat retention properties since the bag's foot end is narrower than the head. The mummy usually unzips part of the way, thus, leaving the feet permanently secured. This is a beneficial feature when camping in colder temperatures since the feet are more prone to heat loss than other parts of the body. However, there is less space to maneuver in, due to the confined design of the bag. Rectangular sleeping bags work well for most camping needs and is comfortable in moderate to warm climates. It may not keep you as warm as the mummy, due to its larger size, which means there is more cold air trapped in the bag. However, there is a larger space for movement. Also, due to the rectangular sleeping bag’s ability to be opened fully, these sleeping bags can be used as a comforter or blanket as well. We also offer hooded sleeping bags which retain more heat and fit your head for a comfortable sleep, much like a pillow. Hoods are mostly found on mummy sleeping bags, however, rectangular sleeping bags offer hoods as well. Many of the rectangular hooded sleeping bags come with drawcords, preventing heat loss. See our page dedicated solely to hooded sleeping bags. Kids sleeping bags can also be found at All Sleeping Bags. Finding kids sleeping bags that are right for your little one can be very difficult.
